Great footwork will get you far in the game of basketball. It’s the foundation for virtually every component of play, from shooting, passing, rebounding, and so on.
Great footwork ability should be built up when players are still young, before any bad habits or poor form has a chance to develop. That’s why so many parents in Albuquerque enroll their children in Terrell Theophile’s Bigger Than Basketball programs.
Coach Terrell uses his impressive experience playing and coaching to teach his students the most important facets of the sport. This includes fundamentals like footwork, which he helps enhance by using the following tips.
The Fundamentals of Footwork
To improve your footwork, you must first understand the fundamentals inside and out. This includes:
- Pivoting – Proper pivoting lets you respond quickly and effectively to game developments. You pivot foot must stay planted on the floor, with most of your weight resting on the front of your foot, as opposed to the arch or heel. Both your dominant and non-dominant foot can be used to pivot.
- Faking/Cutting – Faking refers to tricking your opponent into thinking you’re going one way when you’re really going in another direction. Conversely, cutting is the ability to move quickly across the court while evading the other team. Footwork is key in both instances.
- Offensive Stance – A good offensive stance will allow you to easily make multiple maneuvers, including quickly changing directions, starting and stopping, passing, shooting, etc. A solid offensive stance entails standing with feet a shoulder’s width apart, with the majority of your weight on the front part of your feet.
- Defensive Stance – Defensive stance is pretty similar to offensive stance (feet shoulder’s width apart, weight on the front of your feet, etc.) You should also keep your head up, with your eyes trained on your opponent. Be wary of fakes by keeping your eyes on your opponent’s midsection, which will indicate where he or she is going to move next.
